New Arrivals: Robert and Lacey PDF Print E-mail

Dear Friends,

We at Crossing 7 Taiwan are excited to announce that our new short-term missionaries are arriving on June 22nd. They are a married couple, Robert and Lacey. Having committed for at least 1 year to serving alongside us at Truth Church in Taipei, they will support themselves as English teachers. Their ministry will consist of teaching an English Club at a Truth Church daughter church-plant, in order to reach out to Taiwanese youth, which will run for 5 weeks this summer, as well as helping out in the next season of our Bilingual ALPHA course, beginning in October. Besides these ministries, the growing foreigner community at Truth Church is actively praying about which new English ministries to open up in the future.
Please pray for Robert and Lacey as they make their final preparations for joining us here in Taipei. Pray that they integrate well culturally and relationally, find housing and jobs quickly, and are used mightily to build the Kingdom in Taiwan!

ALPHA Week 10 - Celebration PDF Print E-mail

2010_05_28 ALPHA Week 10 - Game Time 1 The 10th week of our ALPHA course marked the end of a wonderful season. Instead of one of us Western co-workers giving an ALPHA Talk, we celebrated all that God had done during the course.

The evening kicked off with the final part of our weekly ALPHA Skit, in which Sam and Jim (played by Julianne and Erich) reflected on how their friendship had grown during the previous 10 weeks of ALPHA. After recalling some of the great times they had together, the skit concluded by Sam sharing about how he has really been affected by Jesus' claims, and inviting Jim to go to church together.

2010_05_28 ALPHA Week 10 - Transition After the Skit we enjoyed a special musical treat - our friends from the Transition Band played two of their songs for us! "Real Dreams" is about a person longing for his/her friend to exchange their 'distorted dreams' for real ones. The message of "Hope is Coming" is that we are worn out of living a shallow kind of faith, and desperately long for true satisfaction - not just for us, but for those around us! Transition had us singing along, pledging ourselves to bring the Hope of the World to others.

2010_05_28 ALPHA Week 10 - Game Time 2 Next Rhys had us all get out of our seats, and play a crazy game in which we had to pretend to be different animals competing against each other in playing "Paper, Scissors, Stone". The more people you beat, the higher you evolved, from an egg to a chicken, to a monkey, and finally to a T-Rex! It only took a few minutes of frenzied competition until we had a horde of T-Rexs roaming around the room. Great times :D

2010_05_28 ALPHA Week 10 - Game Time 3 Kelley led the next activity, which was designed to lead into our small group discussion time. She placed stacks of sticky-notes on each group's table, and had us writing notes of encouragement to others, then sticking those notes on their back! After a while everyone's backs were covered in messages of encouragement, which we then shared in our discussion group time.

ALPHA Week 10 ended with an extra long discussion group time, in which we could encourage each other, share about our ALPHA experience, and plan how to continue meeting in the future.

ALPHA is over - what now? 2010_05_28 ALPHA Week 10 - Admin Photo

There are several ways we can keep discipling our new friends. Often our new friends from ALPHA are simply invited to join the church cell group led by their ALPHA Course group leader. That way they already know at least one person in a Truth Church cell group, and can integrate smoothly. If several members of an ALPHA group are all willing to continue meeting, their ALPHA group leader can just continue meeting as a church cell group with these members.  Many times the ALPHA co-workers will also meet with a new friend from ALPHA one-on-one to lead them through our church's "New Life Book", which teaches basic Christian doctrine, and leads up to baptism.

For those new friends from ALPHA who either don't have the time to continue meeting regularly, or who simply aren't spiritually ready yet, the ALPHA co-workers will stay in touch with them, and invite them to church outings, meals, etc...

2010_05_28 ALPHA Week 10 - Admin Photo Please pray for us!

Overall it was a great season, in which we touched the lives of over 100 non-believing friends! We co-workers learned a lot, and have lots of new ideas to improve the next season (starting in October 2010).

Even though this season is over, please continue praying for our team of Western co-workers at Truth Church. Some things you can pray for are:

  • We need to preserve unity as our numbers grow (altogether we're at around 16 people now!), and our cell group transitions into a larger fellowship.
  • As our numbers grow, so will our opportunity for service. We are praying about other ways besides ALPHA to reach out to the community of Westerners living and working in Taipei. We need to receive direction from the Lord before we can go forward.

ALPHA Weeks 8-9: Sharing the Good News and What about The Church? PDF Print E-mail
Written by Joanna
Saturday, 22 May 2010 08:34
2010_05_07_Alpha_Week_8_021 The past two weeks of ALPHA have been a blessing.  Last week, Kelley spoke on the Good News of the gospel and why and how we should share the great news of Jesus.  She began her talk by announcing that three lucky participants were going to receive prizes that night! Under three chairs in the room were strips of paper announcing a special prize which included a 200NT gift certificate to the Truth Church bookstore, a seat cushion and my favorite, a container of homemade cookies! Needless to say everyone was quite excited about the possibility of winning something and those three winners had something to share with their friends that night.  Likewise, Kelley talked about how the gospel of Jesus is extremely good news that we should be excited to share with others.  She used stories from her life to illustrate different ways we can share the Good News with our friends and family.  As many of us in Alpha have close family and friends who are nonbelievers, this message was especially relevant.  Many small groups shared about how they have been really experiencing the blessing of the gospel and feeling the desire to share the good news of Christ in their lives.  What an encouragement!

2010_05_21_Alpha_Week_9_040 This week, following yet another delicious dinner, Erich and Rhys led us in a riveting game of “ACT ATTACK!”.  Each group was given a scenario to act out and whoever was able to correctly identify the scenario first, was given a stick of HICHEW.  Being a lover of charades, this was especially fun to watch as many groups got really into their acting!
Following the game, John and Kelley presented a short skit tying in last week’s talk to this week’s theme on the church.  Julianne shared about the meaning of church and the role it should play in our lives.  She talked about the church being not a building but a group of people, driving home this point by saying “We don’t go to church, we are the church.”  Furthermore, she shared about how we all have a different role to play and how all our unique abilities contribute to the strength of the church as a whole.  Her talk inspired a lot of thoughts on the idea of church being about the people and not the institution. Moreover, many of the participants shared about how their experience at ALPHA this season has positively changed their idea of what church and fellowship is.  Praise the Lord!  He’s really been doing wonderful things through ALPHA.

Alpha Week Seven - Receiving Guidance from God PDF Print E-mail

2010_05_07_Alpha_Week_7_a This week’s Alpha was all about hearing from God and acting upon it. Following another delicious meal from the cooking team at Truth, the groups played a game of Catch-Phrase, led by Hannah. Afterwards, Julianne and John presented a sketch in which Julianne’s character, Sue, talked about a new car she was desperate to  which buy, but about which she had some misgivings. This led nicely into Joanna’s talk about how God guides us in our everyday lives.

2010_05_07_Alpha_Week_7_b The daughter of missionaries, Joanna first experienced God’s guidance through her parents’ decision to move to another

continent (an event that would recur a number of times throughout her childhood). She then discussed different ways in which God shows us his will for our lives (e.g. the Bible, the counsel of brothers and sisters, our circumstances, or direct revelation) and talked about how she learned to experience God’s guidance for herself. As it happens, a number of us foreign co-workers have had to make some big personal decisions in the last week, so Joanna’s talk couldn’t have been more timely!

The discussions that followed were lively and interesting, and the table leaders afterwards reported that many participant were becoming very open to the Gospel. Let’s keep on praying that God gives them the courage and faith to commit to a life lived for Christ!

Alpha Weekend PDF Print E-mail

Calvin On the weekend of the 1st/2nd May, over sixty Alpha participants and co-workers set off for a Christian conference centre on the beautiful northern coast of Taiwan. Since we had planned a number of outdoor activities we prayed that the weather would be neither too not, nor too cold. God gave us the ideal combination, and that Saturday we were able to enjoy a mild, sunny afternoon at the beach.

The weekend started off with us playing games and singing praises to God during a refreshingly energetic time of worship, before Pastor Moses gave the first of a series of four talks on the Holy Spirit – the theme of the retreat. Further talks from Moses and his wife Joyce followed, with a time for discussions in our small groups afterwards. This was a good opportunity for our non-Christian friends to reflect on and ask questions about what they had heard and experienced over the weekend.

group_photo In between the talks there were regular intervals for food and games. Kelley and Joanna organised a series of relay races, which involved getting a ball from one side of the “pitch” to the other in bizarre ways (e.g. two people had to run back-to-back with the ball wedge between their two bodies!). Julianne’s game, which involved opening a bar of chocolate and eating it using only a pair of chopsticks, understandably went down well too.

Following the Saturday evening talk, there was an extended time of prayer and worship, in which God spoke clearly and powerfully to many people. At the same time, a number of people commented that they really felt at peace during this time. Following the Sunday morning talk, there was a time for testimonies. One man said that before coming to the weekend, he had been very sceptical about Christianity and indeed any kind of faith. He then shared that the Holy Spirit, and the love of the brothers and sisters around him, had really opened him up to the possibility of belief. Please keep praying for him. Another woman had felt very guilty about coming to the weekend, as it would mean spending time away from her children, but in fact she felt the Holy Spirit reassuring her, and bringing healing to areas of her life that needed to be dealt with.

Julianne Following another scrumptious meal from the fantastic cooks at Truth, the main part of the evening kicked off with a highly amusing game, originally brought to Taiwan by the lovely Alicia (now living back in the States). Something between charades and music chairs, the game involved forming groups of various numbers and acting/dancing out interesting scenarios such as “KTV”, “baseball home run” and my personal favourite the “Chinese Dragon”.

Following Rick’s skit, in which our friend Jim (aka Eric) hits someone else’s car, and is reluctant to follow Su’s (Julianne’s) wise words of instruction, John Carlson gave a basic introduction to the Bible, addressing its purpose, the many kinds of literature and writings contained within it, and ways in which we can apply its words to our lives. John aptly illustrated the concept of “one author, many scribes”  by comparing its compilation to the construction of Taipei 101, our city’s tallest skyscraper. Just as Taipei 101 has a single architect, or group of architects behind it, so the Bible has a single overall author – God. But in fact Taipei 101 was built by many hands, just as the Bible was written by many different people, following the perfect leading of the Holy Spirit.

I’m constantly struck by the openness and honesty of those who attend the course (and of Taiwanese people in general), and tonight was no exception. One girl said she had no idea the Bible contained so many different kinds of literature – she had assumed it was simply a book of instructions – and is very keen to come back next week to find out more. She also asked me lots of questions about what it’s like to be a Christian, and I really appreciated being able to talk frankly and directly about my day to day experience of living with Jesus. snake

This week there won’t be a Friday night meeting, as we’re all off to the seaside bright and early for the Alpha weekend. It’ll be so much fun to spend a whole weekend with our new friends – all of us co-workers are getting very excited about it already! Please pray that we’d really stay focused on God this week, and that we’d prepare our hearts for what could be quite an intense and emotional weekend. Please pray that many of those who attend meet with God for the first time, and enter into a relationship with him. Please also pray for protection against illness or attack, since Satan often tries particularly hard to discourage us before major events such as this one.

Thank you so much for your prayers and support – we really appreciate them, knowing that we can do nothing good in our own strength, and everything in His strength! Praise God!

Alpha Week Five - Prayer Really Works! PDF Print E-mail
Written by Ellie

lots of girls This week at Alpha we looked at the role of prayer. John S. gave a wonderfully anecdotal talk on what prayer is and why it's important. One story that particularly stood out was that of a young academic John knew, who was a virtual genius (she graduated from University at sixteen and was given an award by the President of America for her work), but still felt lonely and insecure. She did not used to be a believer, but decided to carry out a number of "prayer experiments" which were answered in very concrete ways, which led to her becoming a follower of Christ. Another involved a friend who had lost his notebook whilst travelling in the countryside with the names and addresses of all the people he knew, in the days when people didn't have mobile phones or computers as back up. There was no way of getting hold of it, but he and his friends had faith enough to pray. Lo and behold, in the next few days the notebook was posted to his house.

john speaking2 John's talk made a real impression on many of those who attended, and his wonderful examples led other Christians to share with their friends personal stories of how God had answered their prayers in powerful, concrete ways. I think some of the seekers who attended found this refreshing and surprising to hear. One girl joked that she always called her university supervisor "God" because he was "unreachable". Please pray that she and others discover that God knows her better than anyone else in the world and always hears her prayers. In fact, her group is praying for a specific problem that she is facing - please pray that she sees God's power and amazing love in this situation, and that other seekers who have given prayer requests would see very definite answers to these prayers.

Looking back at the last few weeks, we can be really grateful to God for the way in which he has very evidently guided each of the speakers, for the many friendships that have been built and are deepening, and for unity among the co-workers which has enabled us to work well to bring all the different aspects of the Alpha course together, and pray for our new friends with one heart and one purpose. It's brilliant to observe!

Fourth week of Alpha - How do we know we have faith? PDF Print E-mail
Written by Ellie
Saturday, 10 April 2010 07:48

funny_clothes What can you do in twenty seconds? People who attended the fourth week of Alpha had a chance to find out in the “twenty second game”, which saw the group members swapping clothes, dancing like chickens and feeding their referees whatever food they could lay their hands on (even if that was a teabag!).

The skit that followed saw Adam taking on the mantle of the conflicted Jim, whose passionate feelings for his objet d’amour appeared somewhat less convincing when we found out he had yet to talk to the girl in question. Exasperated, his interlocutor, played by the beguiling Julianne, asked how he could possibly have a relationship with someone he never talks to. The theme of this short sketch, penned by Rick, led seamlessly on to Hannah’s talk, which dealt with the issue of faith.

Hannah likened faith to a marriage relationship. How do you know whether you have faith? Well, like a marriage certificate, the Bible is written proof of God’s promises to us. Just as a marriage takes place on a certain date in history, so history tells us how Jesus died and rose from the dead so that we might have new life. And just as a husband and wife experience marriage – the wedding vows lived out – so the Holy Spirit works in us realising the promises of God. Hannah also shared powerful stories of how God has worked in amazing ways in her own life, and the lives of others. A number of people attending commented that Hannah’s examples really spoke to them, especially since everyone has had experience of relationships, whether with other people or with God.

The Alpha weekend is coming up soon, when we’ll travel to the seaside for a couple of days to learn about the Holy Spirit in particular. Many of the non-believers attending have expressed interest in going. This will be a fantastic opportunity for them to experience more of what it means to follow Jesus, and for us to spend time getting to know them. Please pray that many people can make it, and that they really encounter God’s glory and love on this weekend.

3rd Week of the Bilingual Alpha Course....and going strong!! PDF Print E-mail
Written by Kelley
Tuesday, 30 March 2010 07:17
The past three Friday nights many people have filled the 4th floor large meeting room at Truth Church. Why? Because that is where our Bilingual Alpha Course takes place! We have had on average 40 non-believers each week, with last Friday being no exception. Our time kicked off by enjoying a great meal together, followed by a fun English speaking activity led by Hannah, called "Tasty Topics". This activity used M&M's and Skittles to get people sharing different things about themselves and their lives. Following the game, John and Julianne performed the 3rd part of their 10-week long skit. They do a great job each week of leading us into the evening's topic. Friday's topic was "Why Jesus had to Die" and was shared by Ellie. She did a super job of sharing personal testimonies, as well as other people's stories, to connect with the topic, making it more personal.
The final part of the evening was the small group discussion time. This is a special time as it gives each group a chance to share together, get to know one another more, and hopefully answer any questions the non-believers may have. So far the responses from the non-believers have been positive, and we continue to trust that the Lord will do great things in the weeks to come!!
Check out the collage below to see some pictures from last Friday night!

Kelley did an excellent job enthusing the crowds about a getting-to-know-you bingo icebreaker, which was good fun. Everybody took part trying to fill out their bingo cards with people's names and, as time ticked away, social niceties were entirely dispensed with; opening conversational gambits soon consisted of, "Do you have more than two cell phones?!" or, "Do you have a Mac computer?!"
Julianne and John performed with aplomb an amusing sketch penned by Rick, which led into the introductory Alpha talk. Erich's talk was a really great overview of Christianity and what is going to be covered in the talks to come. The discussion time afterwards seemed to go well for each group and people seemed to feel free to share what they felt about the talk.
There was positive feedback from many of the attendees. One girl, not yet a believer, said she'd been to several different churches and normally finds them to be just like going to school. But coming to Alpha was the most interesting and fun experience she'd had at a church and she wanted to come back next week.
On Friday 12th March Truth Church's Bilingual Alpha Course officially kicked off. The fourth floor of Truth Church was soon filled with people milling about and enjoying food together. As well they might, for the food was delicious! All in all there were around 45 non-believers taking part. Most were Taiwanren but America, The Gambia, Czech Republic and South Korea were also represented, meaning an extra English-speaking discussion group.

Pre-Alpha Trip to Wu Lai Tea Farm PDF Print E-mail

A New Year has begun here in Taiwan, and so has the new season of 3E Alpha - a 12-week evangelistic course which aims to explain the fundamentals of Christianity to non-believers. To give them an idea of what lies in store, seeker and co-workers were invited to a pre-Alpha outing on Saturday to a large tea-farm outside Taipei.
The weather forecasters predicted rain, but God answered our prayers and we woke up that morning to glorious sunshine, which continued throughout the day - there was barely a cloud in sight!
When we arrived at the farm we were taken to a large grassy space where we played a number of introductory games. My personal favourite was "identity-swap", which involved getting to know another person and then introducing yourself as that person to somebody else. This cycle was repeated about seven times, by which time everyone was throroughly confused!
This was followed by a barbeque in which we had a cha lot of funance to chat properly to the other people who'd come on the trip. It was so good to see brothers and sisters, who had themselves become Christians through the Alpha course, bringing their friends along to discover Christ for themselves!
The afternoon was spent doing various tea-related activities. Kelley, Joanna, Rhys and I all made green-tea soap which was pretty simple (you melt the soap base and add green tea powder) but a lot of fun. It felt like being back in chemistry class at school! Finally we took a tour of the tea farm, which is absolutely beautiul, before heading home again.
All-in-all about 130 people turned up, about half of whom were seekers. We had an absolutely wonderful day, and all the feedback I've heard was positive. God's been so good to us, and the outing was such an encouragement to us as we kick off a new season of 3E Alpha. Please pray that all those who participated in the trip join us for the Alpha course proper and come to know Jesus as their Lord, Saviour and the best, most faithful, kind and loving friend they'll ever have! Our God is amazing!

New 3E ALPHA Season Begins February 28, 2010 PDF Print E-mail
Written by Erich
Monday, 25 January 2010 02:37
To all our Dear Friends who follow our 3E Ministry here in Taipei,
We are excited to announce that the Spring season of our 3E ALPHA ministry at Truth Church will begin this February 28. We will kick off the season by inviting prospective 3E participants on a one-day outing with our church zone. This will allow us to already begin forming relationships with people that have signed up for the course. We will also be able to invite new friends to join 3E ALPHA, who have not registered yet, but came on the day-trip. So before the actual course even starts we can know and pray for our new friends!

Please pray
for the following important items that still have to fall into place before we start the season:
  • Our team of native English speakers has grown by several members this season! So instead of using the ALPHA course DVD series, our English speaking team will give the ALPHA talks ourselves in English, with a co-worker translating what we say into Chinese. Please pray for good preparation for these important talks, as they will probably be the first clearly spoken Gospel messages that many of our new Taiwanese friends ever hear!
  • Since our English speaking team has grown, we still need to have some meetings to pray, get to know each other better, and gain team unity before we begin serving together.

Thanks to all who pray for 3E ALPHA! Through prayer you are involved in an exciting and fruitful ministry to people who are precious to our Lord, many of whom have never heard the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Just yesterday a girl from last season was baptized in Truth Church, the latest in several baptisms coming out of our last 3E ALPHA season. Praise the Lord for allowing us to work together with him in reaching the nations for Christ!

- Erich and Kelley, on behalf of all Crossing 7 team members

Erich and Kelley's Home Assignment PDF Print E-mail

Erich and I are currently in Germany finishing up the last leg of our 2 1/2 month home assignment. The time has kept us busy, as we traveled to 4 different states in the US and then on to Germany. Much of our time in the US was spent visiting churches, supporters, family, and friends. We had the opportunity to speak about our life and ministry in Taiwan over 10 times to various age groups and in different settings. We reconnected with old friends and formed new relationships as well. One of the most exciting contacts that we made was during our time at our Alma Mater, CIU, where we met with a couple of soon-to-be graduated students who are making plans to move to Taiwan in the summer. They are wanting to get experience teaching English and also serve the Lord in a cross-cultural setting. We are very excited about these potential teammates and new friends!
While our time has been good, we both can't wait to be back on Taiwan soil again. We fly on the 18th from Frankfurt, Germany via Shanghai to Taipei.  We look ahead with anticipation to a new season of language learning, ministry in Truth Church, deepening relationships, and making new friends.

Our Current State

We've said good bye (hopefully only temporarily) to Alicia who has been a great help here in our Ministry.  She is U.S. bound and going to go finish up her degree.  After that we pray God has his way with her and we all hope that way is back to Taiwan!

We had a Thanksgiving Dinner for our last Alpha class.  We all enjoyed good food and good times.  We created 'turkeys' with our hands and then gave each other feathers listing how we were thankful for them.  We ended the day with an awarding ceremony for those that finshed the class with us.

God is doing great things at TLC.  Our Taiwanese co-workers are quite busy this week.  We accepting 45 new people to our family at TLC soon.  Some of the people are transfering to us because they've just moved to the area, but 20 of them are brand new Christians and will be Baptized!  Each new person must go through a kind of confirmation class with a Taiwanese Christian.  This process allows us to get a good idea of if the person really understands the Gospel and has really asked Christ into their life.  So our Taiwanese friends are very busy with all these new Believers.  It is a stressful time but Praise God for his great mercy.  We continue to see God work in great ways here in Taiwan.

We miss our friends Erich and Kelley.  They are currently touring the U.S. visiting churches and telling their story and raising support.  They will be back soon and we look forward to seeing them.

We'll have more of an update soon!

We started the time off playing a game called the "Human Knot" and the guys team beat the girls team every time! It was really fun!

I think this week was specifically special since it was the week directly after Alpha weekend. We were able to see some of them deeper after personally pursuing Him throughout the week. One of our girls who gave her life to God at Alpha weekend bought a Bible this past week once Alpha was over. She is so excited to share Jesus with everyone in her life and to get involved with other Christians. She has a personal conviction and faith that could not have been placed by any other than the Holy Spirit Himself.

We have two weeks left. Please pray for the remainder of the time to be used to HIS fullest advantage to root them into Himself.

Dear Friends,
We just got back from a great weekend retreat during which we really saw the Lord work among our new friends. The weekend's topic was "The person and work of the Holy Spirit", and we all benefited a great deal from the things our Pastor Moses, and his wife, Joyce, shared with us. After each message there was time for our 4 small groups to share together about what they had learned, and clarify any misunderstandings.
The 6 American co-workers that went along (Alicia, Rick, Erin, John, Kelley, and Erich) were responsible for 3 game times and 2 worship times. Here we are doing some planning...
Everyone deep in thought.
Rick and John getting ready to lead us in worship - thanks you guys!
The big game we planned was a relay race that involved all of us putting on masks of different famous people, and answering trivia questions about ourselves when the groups found us.
The highlight of the ALPHA Weekend happened Saturday evening, when we entered into a time of deep prayer ministry with our new friends. Among songs and prayer the Lord did a great work of opening all of our hearts to His love. Several of our new friends made decisions to follow Christ that night, and many were encouraged by the Holy Spirit, as He gave co-workers the wisdom to pray for the seeker's exact needs without having been told what they were.
Small group sharing time
We all left refreshed and happy (as you can see in the picture below :-). Keep checking this blog for future news about the current 3E ALPHA season.
As always, we appreciate your prayers so much!!
