- Living in Taiwan is interesting, convenient and cheap!
- Teaching English as a job allows you to save money and gives you enough free time to do ministry.
- Serving God in Taiwan is an adventure, and Taiwanese people are very willing to learn about your faith.

Pre-Alpha Trip to Wu Lai Tea Farm |

A New Year has begun here in Taiwan, and so has the new season of 3E Alpha - a 12-week evangelistic course which aims to explain the fundamentals of Christianity to non-believers. To give them an idea of what lies in store, seeker and co-workers were invited to a pre-Alpha outing on Saturday to a large tea-farm outside Taipei.
The weather forecasters predicted rain, but God answered our prayers and we woke up that morning to glorious sunshine, which continued throughout the day - there was barely a cloud in sight!
When we arrived at the farm we were taken to a large grassy space where we played a number of introductory games. My personal favourite was "identity-swap", which involved getting to know another person and then introducing yourself as that person to somebody else. This cycle was repeated about seven times, by which time everyone was throroughly confused!
This was followed by a barbeque in which we had a cha lot of funance to chat properly to the other people who'd come on the trip. It was so good to see brothers and sisters, who had themselves become Christians through the Alpha course, bringing their friends along to discover Christ for themselves!
The afternoon was spent doing various tea-related activities. Kelley, Joanna, Rhys and I all made green-tea soap which was pretty simple (you melt the soap base and add green tea powder) but a lot of fun. It felt like being back in chemistry class at school! Finally we took a tour of the tea farm, which is absolutely beautiul, before heading home again.
All-in-all about 130 people turned up, about half of whom were seekers. We had an absolutely wonderful day, and all the feedback I've heard was positive. God's been so good to us, and the outing was such an encouragement to us as we kick off a new season of 3E Alpha. Please pray that all those who participated in the trip join us for the Alpha course proper and come to know Jesus as their Lord, Saviour and the best, most faithful, kind and loving friend they'll ever have! Our God is amazing!

To all our Dear Friends who follow our 3E Ministry here in Taipei,
We are excited to announce that the Spring season of our 3E ALPHA ministry at Truth Church will begin this February 28. We will kick off the season by inviting prospective 3E participants on a one-day outing with our church zone. This will allow us to already begin forming relationships with people that have signed up for the course. We will also be able to invite new friends to join 3E ALPHA, who have not registered yet, but came on the day-trip. So before the actual course even starts we can know and pray for our new friends!
Please pray for the following important items that still have to fall into place before we start the season:
- Our team of native English speakers has grown by several members this season! So instead of using the ALPHA course DVD series, our English speaking team will give the ALPHA talks ourselves in English, with a co-worker translating what we say into Chinese. Please pray for good preparation for these important talks, as they will probably be the first clearly spoken Gospel messages that many of our new Taiwanese friends ever hear!
- Since our English speaking team has grown, we still need to have some meetings to pray, get to know each other better, and gain team unity before we begin serving together.
Thanks to all who pray for 3E ALPHA! Through prayer you are involved in an exciting and fruitful ministry to people who are precious to our Lord, many of whom have never heard the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Just yesterday a girl from last season was baptized in Truth Church, the latest in several baptisms coming out of our last 3E ALPHA season. Praise the Lord for allowing us to work together with him in reaching the nations for Christ!
- Erich and Kelley, on behalf of all Crossing 7 team members |

Erich and I are currently in Germany finishing up the last leg of our 2 1/2 month home assignment. The time has kept us busy, as we traveled to 4 different states in the US and then on to Germany. Much of our time in the US was spent visiting churches, supporters, family, and friends. We had the opportunity to speak about our life and ministry in Taiwan over 10 times to various age groups and in different settings. We reconnected with old friends and formed new relationships as well. One of the most exciting contacts that we made was during our time at our Alma Mater, CIU, where we met with a couple of soon-to-be graduated students who are making plans to move to Taiwan in the summer. They are wanting to get experience teaching English and also serve the Lord in a cross-cultural setting. We are very excited about these potential teammates and new friends!
While our time has been good, we both can't wait to be back on Taiwan soil again. We fly on the 18th from Frankfurt, Germany via Shanghai to Taipei. We look ahead with anticipation to a new season of language learning, ministry in Truth Church, deepening relationships, and making new friends.
Dinner in Milwaukee, Wisconisn with family and some Taiwanese friends!

Our Current State
We've said good bye (hopefully only temporarily) to Alicia who has been a great help here in our Ministry. She is U.S. bound and going to go finish up her degree. After that we pray God has his way with her and we all hope that way is back to Taiwan!
We had a Thanksgiving Dinner for our last Alpha class. We all enjoyed good food and good times. We created 'turkeys' with our hands and then gave each other feathers listing how we were thankful for them. We ended the day with an awarding ceremony for those that finshed the class with us.
God is doing great things at TLC. Our Taiwanese co-workers are quite busy this week. We accepting 45 new people to our family at TLC soon. Some of the people are transfering to us because they've just moved to the area, but 20 of them are brand new Christians and will be Baptized! Each new person must go through a kind of confirmation class with a Taiwanese Christian. This process allows us to get a good idea of if the person really understands the Gospel and has really asked Christ into their life. So our Taiwanese friends are very busy with all these new Believers. It is a stressful time but Praise God for his great mercy. We continue to see God work in great ways here in Taiwan.
We miss our friends Erich and Kelley. They are currently touring the U.S. visiting churches and telling their story and raising support. They will be back soon and we look forward to seeing them.
We'll have more of an update soon!

Week after Alpha Weekend! |

We started the time off playing a game called the "Human Knot" and the guys team beat the girls team every time! It was really fun!
I think this week was specifically special since it was the week directly after Alpha weekend. We were able to see some of them deeper after personally pursuing Him throughout the week. One of our girls who gave her life to God at Alpha weekend bought a Bible this past week once Alpha was over. She is so excited to share Jesus with everyone in her life and to get involved with other Christians. She has a personal conviction and faith that could not have been placed by any other than the Holy Spirit Himself.
We have two weeks left. Please pray for the remainder of the time to be used to HIS fullest advantage to root them into Himself. |

Dear Friends,
We just got back from a great weekend retreat during which we really saw the Lord work among our new friends. The weekend's topic was "The person and work of the Holy Spirit", and we all benefited a great deal from the things our Pastor Moses, and his wife, Joyce, shared with us. After each message there was time for our 4 small groups to share together about what they had learned, and clarify any misunderstandings.
The 6 American co-workers that went along (Alicia, Rick, Erin, John, Kelley, and Erich) were responsible for 3 game times and 2 worship times. Here we are doing some planning...
Everyone deep in thought.
Rick and John getting ready to lead us in worship - thanks you guys!
The big game we planned was a relay race that involved all of us putting on masks of different famous people, and answering trivia questions about ourselves when the groups found us.
The highlight of the ALPHA Weekend happened Saturday evening, when we entered into a time of deep prayer ministry with our new friends. Among songs and prayer the Lord did a great work of opening all of our hearts to His love. Several of our new friends made decisions to follow Christ that night, and many were encouraged by the Holy Spirit, as He gave co-workers the wisdom to pray for the seeker's exact needs without having been told what they were.
Small group sharing time
We all left refreshed and happy (as you can see in the picture below :-). Keep checking this blog for future news about the current 3E ALPHA season.
As always, we appreciate your prayers so much!!

We have been having lots of fun at 3E ALPHA during the past few weeks, and it's hard to believe the course is already halfway over!
Together with our new Taiwanese friends we have
- been challenged in our walk with the Lord through the Nicky Gumbel DVDs we watch every week
- learned lots of fun English songs (with motions :-)
- gotten to know each other better through English games we have learned to play together.
- enjoyed a fun English skit to kick off every class - (thanks Rick, John C, and John S!!)
- gotten to know each other better over tasty snacks and Chinese tea
We are all going on the ALPHA Outing together from November 7th to 8th. Please continue praying that our new friends can continue to learn about what it means to have a real relationship with Jesus Christ!
Here are some of the highlights in pictures - enjoy!
What a great skit!
John and Joyce in conversation.
Erich leading an English group game with John.
Great conversations about Christianity happen here, in our Chinese group time!

3-E Alpha, Tasty Talking, and Prayer
This week at Alpha was great! Each week we continue to see openness abound and hearts being softened. We started this week with a particularly 'tasty' game. Everyone got skittles or m & m's and based upon what color they recieved answered different questions in English. It was such a success that we didn't have time for people to talk more than once. We are really excited to see the level of participation grow each week.
Our topic this week was on Prayer. Pastor Nicky gave a great talk on the purpose of prayer and how to pray. Here in Taiwan the concept of prayer is not foreign to most of our visitors. However, Christian prayer is. This week was a great week for teaching opportunities. Taiwan, being a very religious country, is familiar with many of our concepts, but I think the topic of prayer hits particularly close to home. It was great to be able to show them that prayer is more than a chant, or memorized ordeal, but that prayer is really the conerstone of our relationship with our Father! As we ended this week, many groups were actually in the midsts of prayer themselves. The Spirit of God is truly working on people's hearts.

"Captain on Deck" and "How Do I Have Faith?" |

This week we were pretty short on English teachers because of a wedding but Father had the whole thing covered!
We played a new game called "Captain on Deck" where the Captain calls out a command and everyone has to quickly do it and try and keep themselves from getting out. I asked each small group to contribute a command to the game and I was so surprised how much they got into it! Every single group had an epic command, tremendous feelings of success when sharing it with the group, and an overpowering enthusiasm in the game. We all could not stop laughing. This really livened the group to the message they were about to here--it was just a good morning for us all!!!
We then watched Nicky Gumbel speak about how to have faith. The small groups went really well from what I could tell and things seem to be getting a lot deeper and more personal for the groups. It is exciting. Here are some pictures from the last Alpha and some pictures from the past three.
We appreciate your prayers and follow through with Alpha. Your prayers are being fruitful!

Last 3E ALPHA - Topic: "Why did Jesus have to die?" |

Last Saturday marked the 3rd week of our new 3E ALPHA Course. Even though it was a Taiwanese holiday (Mid-Autumn Festival), we had several new people join us. Before we got into the topic of the afternoon ("Why did Jesus have to die?"), we watched a funny English skit, learned a new English song together, played a big group game, and practiced some new English vocabulary.
The picture below was taken during the song. After Alicia taught us the lyrics, we all went around giving each other high-fives :-)
After the English time we watched the Nicky Gumbel ALPHA Talk on DVD, in which Nicky explains how Jesus had to die to pay for our sins. The course finished with a 30-minute group discussion time in which our new friends had the chance to respond to the message and share their thoughts.
Next week's topic is: "How can we have faith?". Check in early next week to read up on how the afternoon went!

This past Saturday felt very natural and fun!
We started off singing You are My Sunshine and everyone walked around telling each other that they were a sunshine to one another. I felt like this lightened and stretched everyone out for relating to each other more. After the song we played a game called "Two Truths and a Lie" where each person needs to say 2 things that are true about themselves and one thing that is false. Then, the group members are supposed to guess which statement is not true. I sat with a group of about 11-12 Taiwanese girls and they were all enjoying this game so much. I think it made EACH individual feel special to the group as the group gave EACH individual attention and interest. The girls in this group are so bubbly and excited about Alpha. That was really encouraging.
I met a girl who is specifically excited to be participating in Alpha with her older sister. They were both there and we are praying that the Holy Spirit uses this course to extend to the rest of their family.
Once we were done playing the game, our group had a little bit of extra time before we began watching the "Who Is Jesus?" DVD. So, during that time the girls asked me why I love Taiwan and want to learn Chinese. I got to share how Father put it on my heart when I was 11 when I discovered that there were children without Fathers and Mothers AND without the Gospel. All of the girls were very responsive to the story God has given me and were all very excited and encouraged that He has put that on one's heart.
I noticed many of the leaders expressing teaching abilities and relational strategies that I know came directly from the Father! It is so awesome to see HIS hand doing all of the work. Although sometimes we as leaders can put expectations on ourselves or worry if we are doing the best we can, these are HIS people and will have to be HIS work. Please continue to pray that our hearts focus on serving Him and continue to be used as His instruments. |

Hi Everyone,
Last Saturday marked the beginning of our Fall Season 3E ALPHA Course. It was exciting to welcome around 30 new friends into our midst. Together we watched a funny English skit (written by Rick, performed by John S, John C, and Erich), learned a new English song (which Kelley led), practiced our English conversation with a fun group game (which Alicia led), learned some English vocabulary (Erich taught), and watched the first ALPHA Course DVD, in which ALPHA founder Nicky Gumbel encouraged us to consider our purpose in life, in light of the claims of Christ. Even though we English co-workers were unsure of how the first ALPHA meeting would turn out, the Lord really blessed us with a relaxed atmosphere in which we could start forming relationships with our (yet!) non-Christian friends.
Please Pray for:
- the people who registered for the course, but did not show up on the first meeting, to come this Saturday
- the people who came last Saturday to come back, and bring some friends!
- Unity among all the co-workers, Western and Taiwanese
Thanks so much for all your prayers on our behalf! Why not consider coming over for a visit sometime in the future to experience firsthand what the Lord is doing in Taipei.
Sorry there are no pictures up yet - as soon as I can find some online I'll post a few. Our digital camera is broken, so we can't take pics ourselves... |

Last weekend it was so refreshing to go to the mountains together without any plans other than to not make plans. We had such relaxing fellowship and rest! I am really looking forward to the relationships that are growing among and beyond the leadership! This weekend and entire Alpha session is looking super exciting! Please pray specifically for each minute to be used to the fullest advantage of the Kingdom in every life present. Thank you for your earnestness and desire to be updated, His ways are high! |

Dear Friends,
We wanted to let you know that the next 3E Classroom Season will start this September 4th, and run for 11 weeks through November 14th.
There remain many things to be done, from creating an invitation flyer to recruiting new Taiwanese Christians to be our co-workers, to writing all-new curriculum...
Please continue to pray that our multinational co-worker team has unity, works with efficiency, and most importantly, that we effectively show forth the love of Christ!
For those who are not clear about what our 3E Ministry is all about, we encourage you to check out this page of our blog for a more detailed description.

Along with some of our new friends we picked Calla Lilies, ate hot pot, and enjoyed sweet potato soup together. Even though the weather was misty, we still had a great time enjoying the warmth of each other's friendship!

Hi Everyone!
Our 3E Classroom Ministry went on a group outing to Taizhong recently. Of our 40 new friends that currently attend 3E, about 35 came along! Counting Chinese co-workers and American English teachers we were 52 people altogether.
The outing proved to be an amazing time of deepening relationships through games and group times. We are really seeing the Lord working in the hearts of our 3E Classroom members, who were more willing to open up and share from their personal experiences!
Below is a group photo we took before leaving camp on Sunday afternoon.
