Example 1-year Plan

In order to help you know better what to expect during your year in Taiwan we have created this page with a sample 1-year plan. This is not a definitive plan, just an example of what your year could look like, as some items are flexible.

Months 1-3: Getting Settled In

  • Arrival
  • Getting a cell phone (your Taiwanese buddy can help with this)
  • Opening a bank account (your Taiwanese buddy can help with this)
  • Beginning to integrate relationally into Truth Church (forming friendships with Taiwanese people, getting to know the community of foreigners at Truth Church)
  • Learning to find your way around Taipei city (subway system, buses, taxis, learning major roads, etc… - your Taiwanese buddy can help with this)
  • Starting Chinese classes (highly recommended!) - your Taiwanese buddy can help you practice
  • Renting an apartment and apartment set-up (buying appliances, possibly furniture, decorations, etc… - your Taiwanese buddy can help with this)
  • Finding a teaching job
  • Weekend Culture Training done by the Crossing 7 Team
  • Studying Taiwanese (church) culture through focused observation and asking questions
  • Observing English ministry at Truth Church; meeting with ministry leaders to see where you could fit in
  • Ongoing mentoring by a more experienced missionary (couple)

Months 4-9: Stable Life and Ministry

  • Ongoing Chinese classes
  • Taking a more active leadership role in English ministry at Truth Church
  • Ongoing mentoring by a more experienced missionary (couple)
  • Ongoing prayer as to your future direction (staying or leaving?)

Months 9-12: Phasing out or a New Commitment

If you are leaving Taiwan after one year:

  • Ongoing Chinese classes
  • Beginning to slowly emotionally pull out of relationships (this is a natural process of saying good-bye)
  • Finishing your English teaching responsibilities well
  • Closing down your bank account, cell phone contract, apartment rental
  • Departure

If you are committing to another year in Taiwan (we hope so :)

  • Ongoing Chinese classes (intensive classes recommended during the slower Summer months of July - August)
  • Moving into more leadership at church
  • Planning for another ministry season
  • Changing your teaching job if necessary
